CanadaSoccer.com Fan's Choice Award

Soccer fans across the country are asked to vote for their favourite Canadian players in the 2008 CanadaSoccer.com Fan's Choice poll. Voting already started and runs through 9 January 2009. Fans are asked to vote for one male player and one female player.

Voting is simple. Just send an e-mail to the address rscott@soccercan.ca with the subject "CanadaSoccer.com Fans’ Choices". In the message body, just type your two candidates: one male and one female from the candidate list below.

This year’s CanadaSoccer.com Fans’ Choices voting has identified eight favourites for the 2008 season: four men and four women. Those eight fan favourites have captured more than 80% of the vote less than half way through the voting period.

The eight stars are Julian de Guzman, Dwayne De Rosario, Ali Gerba, Tomasz Radzinski, Kara Lang, Christine Sinclair, Melissa Tancredi and Rhian Wilkinson.

Voting for the CanadaSoccer.com Fans’ Choices continues through 9 January. Fans are simply asked to vote for their favourite players - one male athlete and one female athlete. The two winners will not only have their headshots captured in the next edition of the adidas Boot Room, but they will also help reward two lucky fans with a Canada jersey and autographed postcard.

Of course, while fans are picking their favourite players from the 2008 season, media and coaches are simultaneously picking the adidas Canadian Players of the Year based on national-team and club performances. Coaches are also selecting this year’s Canadian U-20 and U-17 Players of the Year. The six player award winners will be announced in the week of 5-9 January.

The 2007 CanadaSoccer.com Fans’ Choices were Rhian Wilkinson and Julian de Guzman. Through the first week of voting in 2008, the top-six leaders are listed below.

Interview with El Ideal Gallego.

Deportivo de La Coruña's "lung" provided less oxygen than habitual, since there were some problems, like red cards and several injuries which led him to be intermittent. Julian ends contract in six months, and he has freedom to negotiate with any other clubs from January 1st, but he hopes to stay in La Coruña and winning a championship. He feels very appreciated in this club, which joined four years ago.

The canadian midfielder, who is currently on holiday in Holland with his family, hopes that the contract renewal with Deportivo could be a reality soon. Since the problems he had with the club about the known debt are solved, Julian feels more focused to get optimal results in the galician club. Year 2008 ends and he doesn't still know where he's going to be next June.

What would you ask to 2009, which is starting soon?

I hope that all the people comes back from their holiday with health, and i'd like that the team could keep running of good luck, as we ended 2008.

What's Julian de Guzman doing for X-Mas?

I'm currently in Holland with my brother Jonathan, my nephews, my children... It's a special time for my family. I'm with my parents too, who came from Canada. We'll spend the new year's eve in Spain.

Do you have any tradition?

In Canada, in 24st December's midnight, after the dinner, we go to the church, and later we open the gifts.

Which could be the best present for 2009?

Winning a championship.

Is that possible?

Yes. We have our chances in La Liga, Copa del Rey, UEFA Cup... We're going to try going as far as possible in every tournament.

And what would you ask for yourself?

I hope to have much more health, so i could play more matches and help the team to win a championship.

Where is Julian going to be in the second part of 2009?

I still don't know, but i prefer to stay in Deportivo if possible. First, i have to show that i deserve the spot in the team.

Did you already fixed the problem with the club about the debts, or you're still worried about it?

The problem is already solved. We reached an agreement and it's good for both parts.

And there is any news about your possible renewal?

I don't know, but it depends on the president, and on how much i work in the field.

Did you believe that the contract renewal would be already made at this point of the season?

I'm not worried, because we have a long season, with a lot of matches. We have the chance to win a title, and i want to make a positive season before thinking about that.
